Summary:
Hunza was an independent princely state ruled by the Mirs of Hunza from Baltit Fort for over 900 years, only formally merging with Pakistan in 1974. Its strategic position on the Silk Road connected it to Central Asia and China for centuries.
A high mountain valley along the upper Hunza River, overlooked by Rakaposhi (7,788m) and Ultar Sar, with the Karakoram Highway running its length toward the Chinese border at Khunjerab Pass.
Hunza's Burusho and Wakhi communities are known for exceptional longevity, terraced apricot farming and a relatively liberal social culture compared to much of Pakistan, including high female literacy and school enrollment.
Mild summers (15 to 28°C), cold winters with snow at higher elevations. April brings the famous cherry and apricot blossom; October delivers golden autumn colour.
