History

Skardu was historically the capital of the Kingdom of Baltistan, ruled for centuries by the Maqpon dynasty from forts including Kharpocho. Its Tibetan-Buddhist and later Islamic heritage gives Baltistan a distinct culture within Gilgit-Baltistan, still visible in its forts, language and architecture today.

Geography

Skardu sits at roughly 2,228m on the Indus River, ringed by the Karakoram Range and serving as the main gateway to K2 and the Baltoro Glacier. The surrounding landscape shifts dramatically from river valley to high desert to the alpine plateau of Deosai within a short drive.

Culture

Baltistan's Balti people speak a Tibetan-derived language and maintain a culture distinct from the rest of Pakistan, shaped by centuries of Tibetan Buddhist heritage before the region's conversion to Islam. Hospitality, apricot farming and mountaineering traditions define daily life.

🌦 Weather & Best Time to Visit

Short, mild summers (June-September, 15-25°C by day) and long, cold winters with heavy snow. Spring (April-May) brings blossom season; roads to Deosai only open June-October.
