Altit Fort, The Oldest Monument in Hunza

Altit Fort is the oldest surviving structure in Hunza, with its watchtower dating back roughly 900 years, older than Baltit Fort, which was originally built as its successor. Perched on a sheer cliff above the Hunza River, it was the original seat of the Mirs of Hunza before power shifted to Baltit.

Restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and reopened in 2011, the fort now anchors a revitalised traditional village with a bazaar, orchards and craft workshops built around it, giving visitors a fuller sense of historic Hunza life than the fort alone.

History

The watchtower at the fort's core is believed to date to around the 11th century, making it the oldest built structure in the Hunza Valley. It served as the residence of the ruling Mir family for centuries before Baltit Fort was constructed as the newer royal seat, after which Altit continued in use as a secondary stronghold.
