Katpana Cold Desert, World's Highest Cold Desert

Katpana Cold Desert sounds like a contradiction, but here it is: sand dunes rising at 2,226 metres against the backdrop of snow capped Karakoram peaks. The world's highest cold desert sits just 10 km from Skardu city, making it an easy half day stop.

In summer the dunes shimmer gold against blue mountain sky. In winter they're dusted with snow, an even more surreal sight. Jeep rides across the dunes and seasonal camel rides are available from local operators.
