Karimabad was renamed in the 1970s in honour of the Aga Khan (whose title includes "Karim"), replacing its earlier name Baltit, after the fort it sits beneath. It has served as Hunza's political and cultural centre for over 700 years as the seat of the Mirs of Hunza.
A terraced hillside town on the west bank of the Hunza River, with Baltit Fort at its highest point and the bazaar strip running below, framed by Rakaposhi (7,788m) and Ultar Sar across the valley.
The commercial and cultural centre of Hunza, blending traditional Burusho village life with a well developed tourism economy of guesthouses, cafes and handicraft shops.
Mild summers (15 to 28°C), cold winters with occasional snow; April brings cherry and apricot blossom across the terraced fields below the fort.
