Shangrila Resort takes its name from the fictional utopia in James Hilton's "Lost Horizon," a name adopted in the 1980s when the resort, including its famous converted airplane restaurant, was developed on the lake, cementing the "Heaven on Earth" branding still used for Skardu today.
Two lakes roughly 15km and 20km from Skardu City respectively, Lower Kachura (Shangrila) accessible by regular car, Upper Kachura slightly further and more forested.
Skardu's most tourism developed spot, anchored by the Shangrila Resort, with a well established boat and photography economy around both lakes.
Pleasant April October; the lakes themselves are a year round feature though facilities scale back in winter.
