History

Deosai was declared a national park in 1993 specifically to protect the critically endangered Himalayan brown bear population, one of conservation success stories of Gilgit-Baltistan, with numbers recovering significantly since protection began.

Geography

A plateau averaging 4,114m, roughly 3,000 square kilometres, between Skardu and Astore, accessible only by 4x4 and only in summer given heavy winter snow.

Culture

Largely uninhabited beyond seasonal shepherd use, valued today primarily for wildlife conservation and its status as Skardu's signature natural landmark.
