Khunjerab Pass, at 4,693m, marks the border between Pakistan and China and holds the distinction of being the highest paved international border crossing in the world.

Getting there: A drive of roughly 2 hours from Sost along the Karakoram Highway, itself a further 2 hours from Karimabad, a full-day excursion from Hunza given the round trip.

Wildlife along the route: Khunjerab National Park, surrounding the pass, is home to Marco Polo sheep, ibex and, rarely, snow leopards, keep watch along the drive, particularly in early morning or late afternoon.

Altitude considerations: At nearly 4,700m, some visitors notice mild effects (shortness of breath, mild headache), this is generally manageable for a short visit but worth being aware of, especially combined with the excursion's long driving day.

Border crossing note: While the pass itself is a tourist viewpoint, actually crossing into China requires separate visas and arrangements, most visitors view the border marker without crossing.
