Takht i Bahi, near Mardan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is widely considered the best preserved Gandhara Buddhist monastery complex anywhere, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980 alongside the nearby city remains of Sahr i Bahlol.
History
Built between the 1st and 7th centuries CE, Takht i Bahi ("Throne of Origins") flourished as a major Buddhist monastic centre during the height of Gandhara civilization, its hilltop position offering both a naturally defensible site and a commanding view over the surrounding plains.
