Sharda Peeth Ruins, Ancient Centre of Learning

The Sharda Peeth ruins mark what was once one of South Asia's most important centres of Hindu and Buddhist learning, a pilgrimage and scholarly destination for over a thousand years before its decline, today a quiet, significant archaeological site at the confluence of the Neelum and Surgan rivers.

History

Sharda Peeth flourished as a major seat of learning from roughly the 6th century CE onward, its script (Sharada) giving its name to a writing system once used across Kashmir, before the site's gradual decline centuries later.
