Shalimar Gardens, UNESCO Listed Mughal Terraced Gardens

The Shalimar Gardens, built by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1641, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site of terraced Mughal gardens with over 400 fountains, a formal counterpart to Lahore Fort and Badshahi Mosque's architectural grandeur, and often underweighted on standard itineraries relative to those two.

History

Commissioned by Shah Jahan and completed in 1641, the gardens follow the classical Persian charbagh (four part) design across three descending terraces, with the fountain and canal system originally fed by a dedicated canal built specifically for the site.
