Overview
The Shah Allah Ditta Caves are a set of ancient caves at the foot of the Margalla Hills, believed to date to the Buddhist era over 2,000 years ago and later used by Hindu and Sikh ascetics. A natural spring and old banyan and mango trees around the cave mouths make the surrounding village one of Islamabad's most atmospheric, least touristed corners.
History
The caves are believed to have served as Buddhist monastic retreats during the Gandhara era, with faint traces of frescoes noted by some visitors, before later use by Hindu and Sikh holy men, a layered religious history typical of the wider Potohar region.
