Rohtas Fort, UNESCO Fortress Built to Crush a Rebellion

Rohtas Fort was built in the 1540s by Sher Shah Suri, ruler of the Sur Empire, specifically to subdue the rebellious Gakhar tribes of the Potohar region and secure the route between Kabul and Lahore. Its massive stone walls, over 4km in circumference with 12 monumental gates, represent one of the finest surviving examples of early Muslim military architecture in South Asia.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, Rohtas Fort remains remarkably intact and largely uncrowded, making it one of the most rewarding heritage day trips from Islamabad.

History

Built between 1541 and 1548 under Sher Shah Suri, who briefly interrupted Mughal rule in northern India, Rohtas Fort was designed to control the strategic Grand Trunk Road route and pacify local resistance. It later passed to the Mughals and saw continued military use for centuries.
