Naukot Fort, Thar Desert Gateway Fort

Naukot Fort stands at the western edge of the Thar Desert and historically guarded an important approach into the desert region. Its massive gateways, brick walls and defensive layout make it one of Sindh's most visually distinctive forts.

In 2026, Naukot Fort was added to Pakistan's UNESCO Tentative List alongside Kot Diji and Umerkot forts. A Tentative List inscription is not the same as World Heritage status; it means Pakistan may consider the property for a future nomination.

The fort is best visited as part of a wider Thar and Umerkot itinerary rather than as a standalone trip. Pair it with local villages, desert landscapes and Umerkot Fort for a fuller understanding of Sindh's frontier architecture.

History

The fort is associated with the Talpur period and functioned as a strategic desert stronghold. Its heavy masonry and controlled gateway system reflect the security needs of routes entering the Thar region.
