Mohenjo daro, 5,000 Year Old Indus Valley Metropolis

Mohenjo daro, meaning "Mound of the Dead," is one of the best preserved urban settlements of the Bronze Age Indus Valley Civilization, dating to around 2500 BCE. Its grid planned streets, sophisticated drainage system and the famous Great Bath make it one of the most important archaeological sites in South Asia.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, the ruins sit near Larkana in Sindh and include an on site museum displaying artefacts recovered from the excavation, including the well known "Priest King" sculpture and Indus seals.

History

Mohenjo daro flourished from roughly 2500 to 1900 BCE as one of the largest settlements of the Indus Valley Civilization, alongside Harappa in present day Punjab. It was rediscovered and excavated beginning in the 1920s, revealing an advanced urban culture with standardised brick sizes, covered drains and multi storey buildings that predates much of the ancient world's known urban planning.
