Makli Necropolis, One of the Largest Funerary Sites on Earth

Makli Necropolis near Thatta spans roughly 10 square kilometres and is believed to hold upwards of half a million graves and tombs built over more than 400 years, from the 14th to 18th centuries. The elaborately carved sandstone mausoleums blend Persian, Central Asian and local Sindhi architectural styles.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, Makli is often visited alongside nearby Thatta's Shah Jahan Mosque, renowned for its intricate tile work.

History

Makli developed as a royal and elite burial ground under successive dynasties ruling Sindh, including the Samma, Arghun, Tarkhan and Mughal periods, each contributing distinct architectural styles that make the necropolis a visual timeline of regional history spanning four centuries.
