Overview

Kot Diji Fort rises above the town of Kot Diji in Khairpur District and commands broad views across the surrounding plain. Its long walls, bastions and elevated setting make it one of northern Sindh's strongest heritage stops.

The fort should be understood together with the nearby archaeological landscape: Kot Diji is also the name associated with an important pre-Harappan archaeological culture. The fort itself belongs to a much later historical period, so visitors should avoid confusing the two.

In 2026, Kot Diji Fort was added to Pakistan's UNESCO Tentative List. It pairs naturally with Sukkur, Rohri and Mohenjo-daro on a multi-day Sindh heritage itinerary.

History

The present fort is associated with the Talpur era and was built as a defensive stronghold overlooking routes through upper Sindh. The area is separately significant for the much older Kot Diji archaeological site.
