Harappa, Twin City of Mohenjo daro's Indus Valley Civilization

Harappa, in Punjab near Sahiwal, is the twin site to Mohenjo daro, together the two type sites that gave the Indus Valley Civilization its alternate name, the "Harappan Civilization." Excavations here revealed granaries, a citadel mound and some of the earliest known standardized weights and script in South Asia, dating to roughly 2600 BCE.

Less visited than Mohenjo daro due to its more northern, Punjab location, Harappa is often paired with it on dedicated Indus Valley heritage itineraries, along with an on site museum housing artefacts from the excavations.

History

First excavated in the 1920s alongside Mohenjo daro, Harappa gave its name to the wider Harappan Civilization and provided crucial early evidence of the sophistication of Bronze Age urban planning in South Asia, including some of the earliest known writing systems in the region.
