Overview

Derawar Fort rises abruptly from the flat Cholistan Desert roughly 100km from Bahawalpur, its 40 massive bastions visible from kilometres away, one of the most dramatically situated forts anywhere in Pakistan.

History

Originally built in the 9th century and substantially rebuilt in the 18th century by the Nawabs of Bahawalpur, Derawar has guarded desert trade routes for over a thousand years, its current form dating largely to Nawab-era reconstruction.
