Overview

Chitral Fort served as the seat of the Mehtars (rulers) of the former princely state of Chitral until 1969, overlooking the town and the Chitral River with Tirich Mir visible in the distance on clear days.

History

The fort has been the political centre of Chitral for centuries under successive Mehtars, playing a role in the historic 1895 Siege of Chitral during the "Great Game" era of British-Russian rivalry in Central Asia, before the princely state's dissolution and merger into Pakistan in 1969.
