History

Passu has long sat on the historic trade route later paved as the Karakoram Highway, connecting Hunza to Gilgit and onward to Kashgar in China, a route travelled for centuries before it became a modern tourist highway.

Geography

A village on the Hunza River in Upper Hunza (Gojal), directly beneath the needle-like Passu Cones and adjacent to the Passu and Batura Glaciers.

Culture

A Wakhi-speaking community in Upper Hunza, distinct from the Burusho-speaking population around Karimabad, with a livelihood traditionally built on farming and, increasingly, tourism.

🌦 Weather & Best Time to Visit

Cooler than Karimabad given its more northerly position; April-October is the main visiting season.

Frequently Asked Questions

An overnight is worthwhile for photographers wanting the best light on the Cones; otherwise it works fine as a stop en route to/from Khunjerab or Sost.
