History

Katpana's dunes formed from glacial sediment carried down by the Indus and Shigar rivers over millennia, deposited and shaped by wind into a genuine desert landscape despite sitting deep in the Karakoram at over 2,000m elevation.

Geography

A sand dune field on the outskirts of Skardu City, framed by snow-capped peaks, the juxtaposition of desert sand and glacial mountains is the site's defining visual.

Culture

A natural landmark rather than a populated area, valued primarily for its unique landscape and increasingly for sunset photography and, on occasion, camel rides arranged by local operators.

🌦 Weather & Best Time to Visit

Best visited April-October; can be very cold at night given the elevation despite the desert appearance.
