History

Founded as the seat of the Khanate of Kalat in 1666 under Mir Ahmad Khan I, the Khanate at its peak covered much of modern Balochistan before being dissolved and merged into Pakistan through the 1950s. The title "Khan of Kalat" is still held ceremonially by descendants today.

Geography

Located roughly in the centre of Balochistan province, at elevation in a mountainous, valley-dotted landscape; nearby Mount Harboi holds notable juniper forest.

Culture

A blend of Brahui and Baloch cultural traditions, Kalat is known for traditional music, dance and distinctive Balochi embroidery, celebrated annually at the Kalat Festival (Jashn-e-Kalat) each October.
