The Kalash are believed to have inhabited these valleys for over 2,000 years, maintaining a belief system, language and social structure distinct from the surrounding Muslim populations of Chitral. Once spread across a wider area of the Hindu Kush, Kalash communities today survive in only these three valleys, making them one of the smallest and most distinct ethno religious groups in South Asia.
Three narrow valleys, Bumburet, Rumbur and Birir, branching south from the main Chitral valley into the Hindu Kush foothills, each home to a cluster of Kalash villages.
The Kalash maintain their own language, an animist influenced religion distinct from Islam, and vivid traditional dress for women featuring colourful embroidery and shell decorated headdresses. Three annual festivals, Chilam Joshi (spring), Uchal (summer), and Chaumos (winter), mark the agricultural and religious calendar.
Warm summers in the valleys, cold winters with snow; the Chaumos winter festival in December is a highlight despite the cold.
