On 4 January 2010, a massive landslide near Attabad village blocked the Hunza River, submerging part of the Karakoram Highway and several villages under what became a 21km long lake. The KKH was later rerouted with tunnels and bridges around the new lake, turning a natural disaster into one of Hunza's biggest modern tourist attractions.

A newly formed tourism economy has grown directly around the lake since 2010, boat operators, lakeside cafes and a handful of hotels built specifically to take advantage of the view.
