Summary:
Known since antiquity, mentioned in the account of Admiral Nearchos, sent by Alexander the Great to explore the Arabian Sea coast in 325 BCE. Declared Pakistan's first Marine Protected Area in 2017.
Also called Jazira Haft Talar ("Island of the Seven Hills"), Astola sits roughly 25km off the Balochistan coast and about 35 to 40km from the fishing port of Pasni, Pakistan's largest offshore island at roughly 6.7 square kilometres, with cliffs rising to about 246 feet.
Uninhabited except for seasonal fishing activity; a small mosque associated with the Muslim saint Pir Khawaja Khizr is used by mainland fishermen during the fishing season.
Best visited outside the June August fishing off season, when rough seas make the crossing more difficult; check current sea conditions before planning a trip.
