Ziarat is a quiet Balochistan hill station carrying outsized historical significance, this is where Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan's founder, spent the final months of his life.

Quaid-e-Azam Residency: Built in 1892 as a British-era sanatorium and later converted into a summer residence, this wooden building is where Jinnah stayed for roughly 70 days in 1948, cared for by his sister Fatima Jinnah, before being flown back to Karachi shortly before his death. The residency's image appears on Pakistan's 100-rupee banknote, a measure of its national significance.

The 2013 attack and restoration: The original wooden structure was severely damaged in a 2013 attack; the Pakistani government undertook a careful restoration, using historical photographs to recreate details down to the original bathroom fittings, reopening the site on Independence Day 2014. Today it functions as a museum displaying Jinnah's personal belongings.

The juniper forest: Ziarat sits within one of the world's oldest and largest juniper forests, with some individual trees estimated at over 1,000 years old, a significant natural landmark alongside the residency's historical weight.

Local produce: Ziarat's cooler hill-station climate supports orchards of cherries and a distinctive red "kulu" apple variety, alongside locally-produced honey considered a regional specialty.

Practical visiting information: Roughly 3 hours (133km) from Quetta by road. Best visited May-September when the weather is most pleasant for outdoor exploration.
