Pakistan's northern rivers offer genuine white water rafting, though it remains a smaller, less commercially developed activity here than in some other Asian destinations, here's where it actually happens and what to expect.

Kunhar River, Naran Kaghan: The most commonly rafted river on a standard northern itinerary, with rapids graded for a range of experience levels depending on the exact stretch and season, best in early-to-mid summer when snowmelt keeps water levels up.

Swat River: Also offers rafting stretches, generally considered a gentler introduction than the Kunhar for first-timers.

Neelum River, Azad Kashmir: Rafting is available on sections of the Neelum, though operator availability and infrastructure are less developed than Naran's more established scene.

What to expect: This is more low-key than commercial rafting operations in destinations like Nepal or the US, expect basic but functional safety equipment, local operators rather than large international rafting companies, and a more improvised, guide-dependent experience.

Practical advice: Book rafting as an add-on activity through us rather than assuming walk-up availability, particularly outside peak summer season when river flow and operator availability both drop.

See our Naran Kaghan destination guide for how rafting fits into a wider valley itinerary.
