For an international visitor, Skardu is one of Pakistan's most straightforward major mountain destinations to include in a normal tourism itinerary. The key is to separate ordinary travel documentation from the special permissions required for a limited number of restricted or expedition areas.

Visa planning

Complete your Pakistan visa process well before departure and make sure the validity dates match your actual itinerary. Requirements depend on nationality and visa category, so use the official Pakistan visa system for the current rules rather than relying on screenshots or old travel-forum advice.

Do you need a special permit for normal Skardu sightseeing?

Standard sightseeing around Skardu, Shigar, Khaplu, Kachura and other established tourist areas is generally planned as regular tourism. Separate permissions become more relevant for certain restricted border zones or regulated mountaineering and trekking routes. Your operator should confirm any route-specific requirement before final booking.

Money and connectivity

Carry some Pakistani rupees for smaller restaurants, village shops and activities even if larger hotels accept cards. Mobile coverage is useful in towns but can weaken quickly on side-valley roads and high-altitude excursions, so download essential documents and maps before leaving the city.

Clothing and etiquette

Comfortable, modest clothing works best. In villages and religious or heritage settings, dress more conservatively than you might at a resort. Always ask before taking close photographs of people, especially in smaller communities.

Health and altitude

Most standard Skardu sightseeing is manageable for ordinary travelers, but higher excursions such as Deosai require more care. Hydrate, pace yourself and avoid turning the first day at altitude into the hardest day of the trip.

Build in flexibility

Mountain weather affects flights and road journeys. Keep buffer time around important international connections and avoid itineraries that depend on every transfer operating to the minute. A slightly slower plan is usually a better Pakistan trip.
