Umbrella Waterfall, near Poona village in Abbottabad District, has become one of the most talked about "hidden gem" hikes accessible from Islamabad, though the hike itself is more demanding than casual social media coverage often suggests.
Where the name comes from: A distinctive rock formation above the falls spreads the water outward in an umbrella like shape before it cascades down, a unique visual feature that has driven much of the location's recent popularity.
Getting there: Roughly 70 to 114km from Islamabad depending on your exact route (via the Hazara Motorway or the shorter Dino Valley Road), typically a 2 to 3 hour drive to the parking area near Poona village.
The hike, demanding: From the parking area, a roughly 30 to 45 minute descent on steep, rocky, occasionally rope assisted terrain leads to the waterfall, the return climb is considerably tougher, often taking 45 to 60 minutes. This is not a gentle stroll despite how it's sometimes marketed.
Who should attempt this: Reasonably fit hikers comfortable with steep, uneven terrain. Not recommended for young children, elderly visitors, or anyone with mobility concerns.
Combining with nearby attractions: Sajikot Waterfall and Mukshpuri Top both sit within reasonable reach, making a fuller day possible for visitors with the time and stamina for more than one stop.
Best time to visit: April through October for dry, more manageable trail conditions, the path becomes hazardous when wet.
