The Karakoram Highway (KKH) from Islamabad to the China border is Pakistan's signature road trip and one of the great overland drives anywhere, but it's worth knowing what you're actually signing up for before you commit to it over flying.

Realistic timing: Islamabad to Hunza is 14-16 hours of driving, typically broken into 2 days with an overnight in Naran or Chilas. Continuing to Khunjerab Pass adds another full day. This is not a "drive it in one push" road, the mountain sections demand a slower pace than the distance alone suggests.

What makes it worth it: The route follows the Indus River through some of the deepest gorges on Earth, passes directly beneath Nanga Parbat, and threads through towns that sat on the historic Silk Road centuries before the highway was paved in 1979 as a joint Pakistan-China project.

Road conditions: Generally well-paved and maintained on the main KKH itself; occasional rough or landslide-affected sections, particularly after monsoon season. A comfortable private vehicle handles it without issue, this isn't a 4x4-only route unless you're detouring off the highway proper.

Beyond the KKH: Babusar Pass connecting Naran to Chilas is a spectacular, higher-altitude alternative route (open roughly June-October only). The Makran Coastal Highway from Karachi to Gwadar is a completely different kind of road trip, desert coastline instead of mountains, and a much less-travelled route worth considering if you've already done the north.

One practical note: Many of our road packages drive key stretches overnight specifically to save daylight hours for sightseeing rather than transit, ask about this option if you're time-constrained.
