Takht-i-Bahi, near Mardan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, holds a significant distinction, widely regarded as the most architecturally complete surviving Gandhara Buddhist monastery complex anywhere, and one of only six UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Pakistan.

UNESCO recognition: Inscribed in 1980 alongside the nearby archaeological remains of Sahr-i-Bahlol, Takht-i-Bahi's listing recognises the site's exceptional preservation and its significance to understanding Gandhara Buddhist civilization.

What makes it exceptional: Built between the 1st and 7th centuries CE, the complex's layout, courtyards, stupa courts, assembly halls and monastic meditation cells, remains clearly readable today, rare completeness for a site this old.

The name and setting: "Takht-i-Bahi" translates roughly to "Throne of Origins," reflecting the site's commanding hilltop position, chosen both for natural defensibility and the sweeping views it offers over the surrounding plains.

Combining with other Gandhara sites: Takht-i-Bahi pairs naturally with Peshawar Museum's renowned Gandhara sculpture collection and, further afield, Taxila's wider archaeological landscape, for a complete Buddhist heritage circuit.

Getting there: Roughly 1.5-2 hours from Peshawar, making it a comfortable day trip combined with Peshawar city sightseeing.

See our Buddhist Cities of Pakistan guide for how Takht-i-Bahi fits into the wider Gandhara story, or our World Heritage Sites of Pakistan guide for the complete list of six.
