Skardu's climate shifts dramatically across the year, and knowing what a specific month actually looks like matters more here than in most destinations, given how much road and site access depends on it.
January February: Cold, often below freezing, with snow common in the city and heavy snow at altitude. Deosai and most high altitude sites are completely closed. This is the quietest tourism month, mainly of interest for winter photography of a snow covered Skardu.
March April: Temperatures begin climbing, snow melts at lower elevations. Late April brings the first hints of blossom season in sheltered spots, though Skardu's blossom is generally later and less prominent than Hunza's. Roads to Deosai remain closed.
May June: Warming steadily, daytime temperatures pleasant (15 to 25°C), nights still cool. Deosai typically opens by late May/June depending on snowmelt. This is when Skardu comes alive for the season.
July August: Peak season, warmest daytime temperatures, all high altitude sites fully accessible, wildflower season at Deosai. Also the busiest and priciest months for hotels and tours.
September: Still warm and fully accessible, with noticeably thinner crowds than July August, increasingly recommended by repeat visitors as the sweet spot month.
October: excellent, golden autumn foliage, clear skies, cooling but still comfortable daytime temperatures. Deosai access starts becoming weather dependent later in the month.
November December: Cold sets in quickly, snow returns to higher elevations, Deosai closes. City sightseeing (Shangrila, Kachura, Shigar) remains possible but increasingly cold.
