A motorcycle trip to Skardu can be one of the most rewarding road journeys in Pakistan, but it should be planned as a mountain expedition rather than a casual city to city ride. Distances are long, weather changes quickly and road quality can vary significantly between the main highway and side valleys.
The classic approach follows the northern road network from Islamabad toward the Karakoram and Indus corridor. Seasonal high pass options can shorten or change the route, but access depends on snow and current road conditions. Never build a fixed motorcycle schedule around a pass without checking it locally.
Start with fresh tires, reliable brakes, good chain and sprocket condition, working lights and basic spares. Carry puncture repair equipment and enough tools for small roadside problems. A comfortable riding position matters because individual days can be much longer than the map suggests.
Top up before remote sections rather than waiting for the tank to become low. Fuel is easier to find on major routes than on side valleys, and a small reserve can be useful when taking less traveled roads.
Ride conservatively around blind bends, landslide zones, gravel, water crossings and heavy vehicles. Avoid pushing into the night simply to reach a pre booked hotel. Mountain travel rewards daylight and patience.
