Sindh carries the weight of being home to the Indus Valley Civilization, among the oldest urban cultures on Earth, while also containing Karachi, Pakistan's most modern, diverse and fast-paced city. Holding both simultaneously is central to understanding Sindhi identity.

Ancient roots, living culture: Mohenjo-daro's 4,500-year-old ruins aren't just archaeology to Sindhis, a sense of Sindh's civilizational depth informs regional pride and identity, distinct from the rest of Pakistan's more recent historical layers.

Sufi devotional culture: Sindh's Sufi tradition runs arguably deeper than any other province's, Sehwan Sharif's shrine to Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, with its ecstatic dhamaal drumming and dance rituals, and Bhit Shah's nightly sung poetry of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai represent one of the most distinctive devotional cultures in South Asia.

Language & the Sindhi identity: Sindhi is one of the oldest living languages in the subcontinent, with its own literary tradition and script history, carrying strong regional pride distinct from Urdu's national lingua franca role.

Karachi's different energy entirely: Karachi itself is almost a culture apart from rural Sindh, Pakistan's most ethnically diverse city, blending Sindhi, Muhajir, Punjabi, Pashtun and Baloch communities into a fast-paced, commercially driven urban culture that looks and feels different from the shrine towns and desert communities elsewhere in the province.

Tharparkar's distinct desert culture: In Sindh's far southeast, the Tharparkar desert region carries yet another layer, one of Pakistan's largest Hindu populations living alongside Muslim communities, with a Thari cultural identity distinct even from the rest of Sindh.
