Skardu Bazaar is the centre of local shopping, here's what's worth buying and where to find it.
Dried fruit and nuts: Apricots and walnuts are Skardu's signature produce, dried apricots specifically are a distinctive, good value souvenir, sold throughout the bazaar and directly by some farms in season.
Gemstones: Gilgit Baltistan is known for semi precious stones (topaz, aquamarine and others), Skardu Bazaar has dedicated gemstone shops, though as with any gemstone purchase, buying from an established, reputable dealer matters more than the lowest price offered.
Hand knitted wool caps and Pashmina shawls: Warm, practical and useful souvenirs given the mountain climate, widely available and a popular purchase.
Balti handicrafts: Local craft items reflecting Baltistan's Tibetan influenced design traditions, available in smaller specialty shops within the bazaar.
Practical tips: Bargaining is expected in the general bazaar but not at fixed price shops, read the context. Evening is when the bazaar is liveliest. Bring extra cash specifically for shopping, since card acceptance is minimal even in the main bazaar.
