If you're heading into Gilgit Baltistan or Azad Kashmir's more remote valleys, there's one network name worth knowing that most first time visitors have never heard of: SCOM.
What SCOM actually is: SCOM is the mobile brand of the Special Communications Organization (SCO), a Pakistani government body established in 1976 specifically to provide telecommunications in Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan, regions where standard national carriers historically struggled to build infrastructure given the terrain and, in some areas, security sensitivities near the border.
Why it matters more than Jazz or Zong in remote areas: SCOM operates exclusively in these two regions but reaches remote places, Shimshal, Chapursan, Deosai, Hushe Valley and similar far flung valleys, where national carriers have no presence at all. SCOM was, in fact, the first network to install a mobile tower at K2 Base Camp itself, previously reachable only by satellite phone.
Coverage reality: SCOM reaches an estimated 450+ towns, villages and settlements across AJK and Gilgit Baltistan, including many locations no other operator serves, the most extensive rural coverage in the region, even if its city centre service in places like Skardu or Gilgit can feel less polished than Jazz or Zong's.
Our practical advice: If your itinerary sticks to Skardu city, Karimabad and other larger towns, Jazz or Zong will serve you fine. If you're heading into Deosai, Chapursan, Shimshal, Hushe or any serious trekking route, get a SCOM SIM too, it's often the only signal you'll have for genuine emergency contact in these areas.
Where to get one: SCOM SIMs are sold locally within Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, pick one up in Skardu, Gilgit or Muzaffarabad rather than expecting it at Islamabad airport, since SCOM doesn't operate outside these two regions.
See our SIM Cards in Skardu guide for the broader picture on getting connected, or our Pakistan Internet guide for what to expect beyond mobile signal.
