Road conditions: The Karakoram Highway is generally well paved but has mountain road characteristics, sharp turns, occasional landslide affected sections, especially after monsoon rain. Side valley roads (Chapursan, Shimshal, Deosai) are often unpaved and require genuine 4x4 capability.
Why driver quality matters more here than almost anywhere: Experienced local drivers who know specific road conditions, seasonal hazards and safe stopping points reduce risk compared to unfamiliar drivers, this is a core reason we vet every driver we work with rather than using ad hoc arrangements.
