Punjab is Pakistan's most populous province and, by common national consensus, its cultural centre of gravity, home to the country's literary tradition, its most celebrated food culture, and a Sufi devotional heritage that shapes daily life far beyond religious observance.

Language & literature: Punjabi is one of the most widely spoken languages in Pakistan and carries a rich poetic tradition, Bulleh Shah and Baba Farid's verses, still performed as qawwali today, are foundational to Punjabi identity in a way that goes well beyond religious practice into everyday cultural reference points.

Sufi shrine culture: Punjab holds some of South Asia's most significant Sufi shrines, Kasur (Bulleh Shah), Pakpattan (Baba Farid), where devotional music, poetry and pilgrimage remain living traditions rather than historical curiosities. The annual Urs (death anniversary) celebrations at major shrines draw enormous crowds and represent Punjab's spiritual culture at its most visible.

Food as identity: Punjabi hospitality is inseparable from food, a Punjabi household's warmth is expressed through insisting guests eat more, and Lahore's food scene (nihari, chargha, Food Street's density of options) is central to how Punjabis understand their own culture, not just a tourist attraction layered on top of it.

Craft & trade identity: Beyond Lahore, Punjab's smaller cities carry their own craft identities, Chiniot's woodworking, Multan's blue pottery, Sialkot's sports goods manufacturing, each a source of genuine local pride and regional distinction within the wider province.
