Sost, in upper Hunza, is the last significant settlement before Khunjerab Pass and the Chinese border, functioning as Pakistan's frontier trading town on the Karakoram Highway.
Sost hosts Pakistan's dry port facility for Pakistan China trade, one of the town's defining features, with trucks and goods regularly passing through en route to or from Kashgar via Khunjerab Pass.
Sost serves as the final staging point for the drive to Khunjerab Pass, the world's highest paved international border crossing, most travelers overnight here before or after the excursion.
Sost's character reflects its border town function, immigration facilities, customs infrastructure and a different, more functional atmosphere than the scenic tourist towns further down the valley like Karimabad or Gulmit.
June through September, when Khunjerab Pass itself is open, the pass closes under snow for much of the rest of the year.
