Naltar Valley, a genuine side-valley near Gilgit, offers striking turquoise lakes and a small ski resort, an accessible addition for travelers with a few extra days beyond the standard Hunza-Skardu circuit.

Naltar Lakes

Naltar's series of small lakes, striking for their vivid turquoise-green colour, are the valley's main draw, a photogenic, relatively easy-to-reach destination compared to some of the region's more demanding trekking routes.

Naltar Ski Resort

Naltar hosts one of Pakistan's few functioning ski resorts, considerably smaller and less developed than Malam Jabba but offering winter sports access within reach of Gilgit.

Forests and Wildlife

Naltar's pine forests support genuine wildlife including markhor populations in the surrounding protected areas, adding a real ecological dimension beyond the valley's scenic lakes.

Getting There

Naltar is reached via a jeep track from Gilgit, requiring 4x4 transport given the rough road conditions on the approach.

Best Time to Visit

June through September for the lakes at their most vivid; winter transforms Naltar into a genuine, if modest, ski destination.

See our Hunza destination guide for how Naltar combines with a wider Gilgit-Hunza itinerary.
