Kharmang Valley, roughly 100 to 120km from Skardu along the Indus River toward the Line of Control, is one of Baltistan's five main valleys, less visited than Skardu, Shigar or Hunza, offering waterfalls and fort ruins with a real sense of discovery.
Manthokha, roughly 180 feet high, is the valley's most talked about attraction, one of the most impressive waterfalls in Gilgit Baltistan, reached via the Skardu Kargil road.
Khamosh ("Silent") Waterfall, near Baghicha village, is considered one of the most prominent cascades in the wider Gilgit Baltistan region, a worthwhile pairing with Manthokha on the same route.
Tolti, the district headquarters, sits on the Indus's fertile left bank, while Pari village is renowned locally for its apples, both offering an authentic look at Balti agricultural village life along the river.
Kharmang Fort, in Kharmang Khas Valley, reflects the region's history of fortification under 16th century Balti ruler Ali Sher Khan Anchan, whose name gave the valley "Kharmang", Balti for "abundant forts."
June through September; the valley's remoteness means road conditions and travel time can vary, so a local guide familiar with current conditions is valuable.
