Peshawar is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Asia, over 2,000 years of history as a crossroads between South and Central Asia, yet it remains one of the most underrated stops on a Pakistan itinerary, often skipped entirely by first time visitors focused on the north.
How many days: A single well paced day covers the essentials, Qissa Khwani Bazaar, Sethi Mohalla's heritage houses and Peshawar Museum's Gandhara collection. Two days allows an overnight and the addition of the Khyber Pass viewpoint.
When to go: November through February, Peshawar gets hot in summer (often 40°C+ from May through August), and the old city's dense, shaded lanes are far more comfortable to explore in cooler weather.
Getting there: A straightforward 1.5 to 2 hour drive from Islamabad via the M 1 Motorway, or domestic flights from major cities, making it an easy add on to an Islamabad based itinerary rather than requiring a dedicated separate trip.
What it costs: A private day trip from Islamabad runs roughly PKR 14,500 per person; a 2 day trip adding the Khyber Pass viewpoint runs roughly PKR 27,000.
One thing people underestimate: Namak Mandi's open flame karahi, best eaten in the evening when the stalls are in full swing, is one of the best meals available anywhere in Pakistan, don't treat Peshawar as a quick daytime bazaar stop and miss it.
