Editorial note: Prepared by the Pakistan Tours local operations team. Visa, permit, safety, access and price information can change; confirm current official requirements and your written quotation before travel.

This is the master overview, if you're only going to read one article before planning a Pakistan trip, this is the one, with links into every deeper guide from here.

The regions, at a glance: Gilgit-Baltistan (Hunza, Skardu) for the most dramatic mountain scenery; Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Swat, Naran, Chitral) for accessible green valleys; Punjab (Lahore, Multan) for Mughal heritage and food; Sindh (Karachi, Mohenjo-daro) for ancient history and coastline; Azad Kashmir (Neelum Valley, Murree) for quieter, closer mountain escapes; Balochistan (Quetta, Gwadar) for the least-visited, most remote experiences.

When to go: June-September for the full northern mountain circuit; October for arguably the best all-round month (golden colour, thinner crowds, comfortable everywhere); November-March for Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi and the southern plains, which are uncomfortably hot in summer.

What it costs: A standard 7-10 day trip runs PKR 40,000-150,000 per person depending on region and comfort tier; budget road-trip options exist from as little as PKR 15,000-20,000 for shorter trips.

Getting in: Eligible travelers use Pakistan's official online visa system, with Visa Prior to Arrival available to qualifying nationalities. Islamabad is the main gateway for northern trips, Lahore for Punjab, Karachi for Sindh.

Culture, in brief: Not one culture but several distinct ones, Punjab's Sufi/Mughal heritage, Sindh's ancient roots, Gilgit-Baltistan's Tibetan-influenced Balti culture, and the Kalash people's unique pre-Islamic traditions in Chitral.
