Neelum Valley and Hunza sit in different provinces entirely (Azad Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan respectively), with different characters despite both being northern mountain destinations.
Scenery, different types of beauty. Neelum Valley offers lush, green riverside scenery with a quieter, less commercialised feel. Hunza offers starker, higher altitude Karakoram drama, forts, turquoise lakes and towering peaks.
Access, Neelum is more convenient from Islamabad. Neelum Valley is reached via Muzaffarabad, itself 1.5 to 2 hours from Islamabad. Hunza requires a considerably longer journey by air plus road or full road trip.
Development and tourism infrastructure, Hunza is more established. Hunza has a more mature tourism scene (Serena Hunza, well developed Karimabad) than Neelum Valley's comparatively quieter, less commercially developed villages.
Who should choose which: Neelum Valley for a quieter, greener, more accessible mountain trip with fewer crowds. Hunza for the more iconic, postcard famous Karakoram experience, if you have the time for the longer journey.
