Pakistan's museums hold a rich concentration of archaeological and cultural material, here's where the most significant collections actually are.

Lahore Museum: One of Pakistan's oldest and largest museums, with an unusually broad scope spanning Gandhara sculpture, Mughal-era artefacts, coins, textiles and colonial-era history, a comprehensive single stop for understanding Punjab's layered history.

Peshawar Museum: Home to one of the world's finest Gandhara Buddhist sculpture collections, recovered from Taxila, Takht-i-Bahi and other regional excavation sites.

Taxila Museum: A focused collection specifically documenting the Gandhara civilization, best visited alongside the Taxila ruins themselves rather than as a standalone stop.

National Museum of Pakistan, Karachi: Covers Pakistan's history from the Indus Valley Civilization through to independence, including significant Mohenjo-daro artefacts.

Lok Virsa Museum, Islamabad: A folk heritage museum documenting Pakistan's living cultural traditions, textiles, crafts, musical instruments and regional dress, a good introduction to the country's cultural diversity in one visit.

Harappa Museum: A smaller, more focused collection at the Harappa archaeological site itself, useful context for understanding the ruins.

Quaid-e-Azam Residency, Ziarat: Technically a historical residence rather than a traditional museum, but functions as one, displaying Jinnah's personal belongings within the restored building where he spent his final months.

See our destination guides for Lahore, Taxila and Islamabad for how these museums fit into a wider itinerary.
