Mukshpuri Top (also spelled Mushkpuri), at 2,800m, is the second highest peak in the Galiyat region after Miranjani (2,992m), and one of the most accessible serious peak hikes reachable from Islamabad.
Location: Rising above Dunga Gali within Ayubia National Park, roughly 90km north of Islamabad, close enough for a long day trip, though many visitors combine it with an overnight Nathiagali stay.
The two routes: The Nathiagali side trail is a steady, roughly 4km climb taking about 2 to 3 hours, with a gradual gradient suited to families and less experienced hikers. The Dunga Gali side route is shorter but noticeably steeper, appealing to hikers wanting a quicker, more demanding ascent.
What you'll see from the top: On clear days, views reportedly extend to Abbottabad, Murree, the Jhelum River, and even parts of Azad Kashmir, a wide panorama for a peak this accessible.
Using Mukshpuri as a base for further hikes: Some hikers use Mukshpuri as a staging point for onward routes toward Miranjani or Pir Chinasi, for those wanting to extend beyond a single peak day.
Difficulty: Moderate, achievable for reasonably fit hikers without technical climbing experience, though winter conditions (snow, ice on narrow sections) raise the difficulty and risk considerably; April October is the recommended window.
Practical tips: Carry at least 1 litre of water per person, sturdy footwear, and a trekking pole if available, no shops exist on the trail itself.
