Kel, in upper Neelum Valley, serves primarily as the practical gateway to Ratti Gali Lake, one of Azad Kashmir's most rewarding high-altitude excursions, and the main reason most visitors make the journey this far up the valley.

Ratti Gali Lake: A glacial lake reached via jeep and a moderate hike from Kel, offering dramatic high-altitude scenery comparable to some of Gilgit-Baltistan's more famous alpine lakes, a real highlight for AJK-focused itineraries.

Kel village itself: A modest settlement functioning mainly as a staging point, basic guesthouses and jeep arrangements for the Ratti Gali excursion rather than a destination with extensive sightseeing of its own.

Getting there: A drive up the Neelum Valley road from Muzaffarabad, with Kel positioned well up the valley before the road continues toward Taobat and the valley's end.

Practical logistics for Ratti Gali: A 4x4 jeep is required for the approach, followed by a moderate hike to reach the lake itself, arrange this locally in Kel or, more reliably, as part of an organized tour.

Best time to visit: June-September, when the jeep track and hiking trail are most reliably accessible and snow-free.

See our Kel destination guide or our Neelum Valley guide for the full valley itinerary including this excursion.
