Hunza and Skardu are Pakistan's two most famous northern travel regions, but they suit different trips. Hunza is built around a long, scenic Karakoram Highway corridor with historic villages, forts and easy day excursions. Skardu is more spread out, with high altitude plateaus, cold deserts, lakes and the gateway routes toward Baltistan's great mountain ranges.
You want a smoother road trip experience, easier access to multiple attractions in a compact corridor, strong village culture, Baltit and Altit forts, Attabad Lake, Passu and Khunjerab Pass. Hunza is especially strong for first time road travelers, families and photographers who want many viewpoints without long off road transfers.
You want broader landscapes, Deosai, Shigar and Khaplu heritage, Upper Kachura, Satpara, cold deserts and access toward serious trekking country. Skardu generally rewards travelers who can give the region more days and accept longer driving between attractions.
Both regions can be reached by domestic flights subject to weather and operational schedules. Overland travel is part of the experience but journey times can change with road works, landslides and seasonal conditions. Always build buffer time around domestic flights in the mountains.
For a short northern holiday, choose one region and explore it properly. With roughly 8 to 12 days, combining Hunza and Skardu becomes much more rewarding, especially when traveling by road between the regions.
Pick Hunza for a compact cultural road trip; pick Skardu for expansive landscapes and deeper adventure. If this is your only Pakistan trip and you have enough time, combine both rather than treating them as substitutes.
