Harappa, in Punjab's Sahiwal district, is Mohenjo daro's twin city, together the two sites gave their name to the entire Indus Valley Civilization, sometimes called the "Harappan Civilization" in academic literature.
Why Harappa matters: As one of the earliest and largest urban centres of the Indus Valley Civilization, Harappa reveals the same sophisticated grid planned urban design, standardized weights and measures, and advanced drainage systems found at Mohenjo daro, evidence of a coordinated civilization spanning a vast geographic area roughly 4,000 to 4,500 years ago.
How it differs from Mohenjo daro: Harappa's ruins are generally less extensively excavated and preserved than Mohenjo daro's, partly due to earlier, less careful excavation history and some historical brick robbing for other construction projects in the region, meaning a visit here feels somewhat more low key and less visually dramatic than Mohenjo daro's more extensive exposed ruins.
The on site museum: Harappa's museum houses artefacts recovered from the site, seals, pottery, tools and figurines, offering useful context for understanding daily life in this Bronze Age city.
Practical visiting information: Harappa's location in Punjab, rather than Sindh, means it's more naturally combined with a Lahore based itinerary than with the Sindh heritage circuit (Mohenjo daro, Makli) further south, a useful distinction when planning which sites to combine on a single trip.
